About SRWA

The Soque River Watershed Assocation (SRWA) is a non-profit organization working to protect and restore the Soque River in Northeast Georgia. The Soque River is the only river in Georgia to begin and end all within one county, Habersham. It is a major headwater tributary to the Chattahoochee River which serves as the primary drinking water supply for the city of Atlanta. The organization, founded in 1998, is governed by a community-oriented board of directors, and has two staff members. Primary activities of the Association include: organization of a community watershed partnership; grant management of a Federal 319 project to complete a watershed assessment and draft a watershed protection plan; coordination of a community greenway project; and collaboration with local officials on conservation policy and planning improvements.

Our History

The Beginnings

In 1998, a group of passionate community members came together with a shared vision: to ensure the water quality of the Soque River in Northeast Georgia. This vision was first discussed in a cozy living room, where our founding members held the inaugural meeting. With a deep commitment to protecting the natural beauty and health of the Soque River, they laid the groundwork for what would become a vital organization in the region.

Early Efforts

From these humble beginnings, our organization quickly grew in both scope and impact. The early years were marked by grassroots efforts, community engagement, and the development of educational programs aimed at raising awareness about the importance of water quality. Volunteers conducted river clean-ups, water testing, and advocacy work, setting the stage for long-term conservation initiatives.

Growth and Impact

As we moved into the new millennium, our organization expanded its reach and resources. We established partnerships with local governments, schools, and environmental groups, amplifying our impact on the Soque River and its surrounding ecosystems. Through persistent effort and community support, we have been able to implement numerous successful projects, from habitat restoration to pollution prevention.

Today and Beyond

Today, our commitment to the Soque River remains as strong as ever. We continue to lead the charge in preserving this precious natural resource through scientific research, policy advocacy, and community education. Our organization has become a cornerstone of environmental stewardship in Northeast Georgia, thanks to the dedication of our members and supporters.

As we look to the future, we remain focused on our mission to protect and enhance the water quality of the Soque River for generations to come. Join us as we continue this important journey, honoring our history while forging a sustainable future.
