About SRWA

The Soque River Watershed Assocation (SRWA) is a non-profit organization working to protect and restore the Soque River in Northeast Georgia. The Soque River is the only river in Georgia to begin and end all within one county, Habersham. It is a major headwater tributary to the Chattahoochee River which serves as the primary drinking water supply for the city of Atlanta. The organization, founded in 1998, is governed by a community-oriented board of directors, and has two staff members. Primary activities of the Association include: organization of a community watershed partnership; grant management of a Federal 319 project to complete a watershed assessment and draft a watershed protection plan; coordination of a community greenway project; and collaboration with local officials on conservation policy and planning improvements.

What We Do

Our Priorities

Every 3 years SRWA develops a strategic plan that outlines all the programs and projects that we hope to accomplish. We are in the process of developing our plan for the next 3 year period. see below to dig deep into what kinds of projects we strive for in the years ahead

Watershed Awareness and Keep Habersham Beautiful

The SRWA organizes several different projects to keep our area looking pristine. The ADOPT-A-ROAD program is a former Keep Habersham Beautiful project that the SRWA took on in the summer of 2012. (The State has currently stopped promoting this program until further notification.) We also host at least two annual community clean ups, one in the spring (the Sweep the Soque clean-up) and one in the fall (the Rivers Alive Clean-Up usually in September

Community Water Monitoring

One way SRWA keeps an eye on water quality in the Soque is by partnering with volunteers to monitor our streams and river through two Programs: Neighborhood Water Watch (NWW) and Adopt-A-Stream (AAS).  Both these programs allow citizens to monitor their own waterways, whether they live near the banks of the Soque or by the tiniest of backyard streams.

Protection and Restoration

he goal of this program is to protect existing water quality and to restore impaired water quality through “on the ground projects” that address the central causes of impairment to the Soque Watershed (bacteria, sediment and stormwater). Specifics include Water Quality Sampling to identify and prioritize strategic sites for protection and restoration activities, Cattle Exclusion Projects to reduce both bacteria and sediment pollution, Riparian Revegetation to plant woody vegetation in the 15-25 ft recommended “undisturbed riparian zone”, Natural Channel Design Streambank Restoration to teach residents about streamside management, and using Sediment Source Assessment to locate sediment hotspots.

Publications

Our publications provide vital insights into the health and sustainability of the Soque River in Northeast Georgia. Through comprehensive research, community stories, and actionable recommendations, we aim to raise awareness and drive conservation efforts. Each issue highlights our latest projects, scientific findings, and ways the community can get involved in protecting this precious natural resource. By staying informed through our publications, you can join us in ensuring the water quality of the Soque River for generations to come.

Stream Restoration for Home Owners

Stream restoration for homeowners is a crucial step in preserving the natural beauty and ecological health of your property. By implementing stream restoration techniques, you can prevent erosion, improve water quality, and enhance habitat for local wildlife. Our expert guidance helps you restore stream banks, plant native vegetation, and manage runoff effectively. Taking these actions not only benefits your property but also contributes to the overall health of the Soque River and its surrounding ecosystem. Together, we can create a thriving, sustainable environment right in your own backyard.
