About SRWA

The Soque River Watershed Assocation (SRWA) is a non-profit organization working to protect and restore the Soque River in Northeast Georgia. The Soque River is the only river in Georgia to begin and end all within one county, Habersham. It is a major headwater tributary to the Chattahoochee River which serves as the primary drinking water supply for the city of Atlanta. The organization, founded in 1998, is governed by a community-oriented board of directors, and has two staff members. Primary activities of the Association include: organization of a community watershed partnership; grant management of a Federal 319 project to complete a watershed assessment and draft a watershed protection plan; coordination of a community greenway project; and collaboration with local officials on conservation policy and planning improvements.

How to Volunteer

SRWA Volunteers Needed

We love our volunteers and couldn’t operate without them. If you have time and energy to offer, please let us know. We are happy to have you. Water Collection

40 locations

The SRWA is always looking for new and additional weekly water collection volunteers, called the Neighborhood Water Watch (NWW) Team. With over 20+ river and creek program collection sites, the need for new volunteers is an ongoing challenge. If you have the time each Monday, between 8am to 11am to collect a water sample(s) at an agreed to site within the Soque River Watershed, we could certainly use your help! All water samples collected would need to be dropped off that day at the North Georgia Technical College Science Lab by 11am. The SRWA NWW Team is a very social group, and several volunteers meet for coffee and a donut each Monday at the NGTC cafeteria to just talk about the river! If you have interest in being a part of one of our most important SRWA programs, please contact the SRWA Team at 706-754-9382 or by email at srwa@soque.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

Event Set-up & Greeters

4-5-24 & 4-6-24

The SRWA normally has one event scheduled each month throughout the calendar year. Without volunteer help, key events like fundraisers, annual meetings, meet & greet functions, recognition ceremonies, etc. would not be possible! If you are willing to donate your time periodically, the SRWA Team would welcome your generous assistance. If you are interested, please contact the SRWA Team at 706-754-9382 or by email at srwa@soque.com. We look forward in talking with you!

Outdoor River Work and Planting Projects

The SRWA plans to have three to four key outdoor work and planting projects each year. Like most big projects, we cannot complete them without the involvement of our volunteer teams. If you like getting dirty outdoors, planting, digging, moving dirt, restoring nature to its normal state then do we have a job or jobs for you! The SRWA Team needs immediate volunteers to work on several upcoming 2024 river work and planting projects. Bring your “green thumb” and your work gloves and join us for some of the most rewarding efforts you can ever be involved in! Help us make the Soque River and its surrounding area beautiful again! If interested, please contact the SRWA Team at 706-754-9382 or by email at srwa@soque.com. We can’t wait to get started!

Photographer or Drone Flyer

Annually of Soque River

The SRWA Team loves sharing with our community beautiful river and watershed videos, event photos, special member moments, etc., but we lack the experience and the volunteers needed to meet this commitment. If you can donate your expertise periodically to help us capture the beauty of the Soque Waterway or document our key events, then let us know. Please contact the SRWA Team at 706-754-9382 or by email at srwa@soque.com. We look forward to having you on our volunteer team!

Outdoor Events Coordinator

The SRWA Team has a strong history of providing our community with opportunities to participate in many fun and enjoyable outdoor activities. We would like to maintain this program, but we need volunteers that would be willing to help organize and execute SRWA sponsored nature hikes, photo trips, kayak excursions, greenway walks, student field trips, etc. If you have a desire to be more active in the outdoors and want to share that experience with others, please contact the SRWA Team at 706-754-9382 or by email at srwa@soque.com. Based on our wonderful North Georgia weather, we look forward to your help in building the best SRWA outdoor activities program possible!

School Advocacy and Outreach Programs

Inspire the next generation by volunteering in our annual SRWA school outreach programs, delivering engaging presentations focused on conservation, clean drinking water, environmental challenges, and the importance of volunteerism. Other student activities include nature focused projects, outdoor field trips, hands on river work projects, etc. that reinforce the importance of taking care of the wonderful natural resources that surround us. The importance of educating our young people is key at preserving for future generations what we have today! We welcome your participation! Please contact the SRWA Team at 706-754-9382 or by email at srwa@soque.com. Our future is today!
